This is the story of a group of men who valued justice above all else, even their own lives. They were part of the large Corps of Samurai in the feudal domain of Akô in western Japan. However, when their lord committed the offense of drawing his sword within the castle of the Shogun, the punishment was severe. He was to be sentenced to death, his heir would not inherit the domain, and all of his vassals would become ronin, expelled from their homes and stripped of their income. All 308 samurai in Akô understood and accepted this consequence, as they were well aware of the law. Had their lord succeeded in killing the man he attacked in the castle, the story would have ended tragically. However, their lord was overcome and failed to kill his enemy, triggering the Principle of Equal Punishment.
47: The True Story of the Vendetta of the 47 Ronin from Akô vividly recounts the harrowing events that unfolded, the resulting consequences, and the fate of the forty-seven men who remained. This book describes the tale in great detail, complete with maps, graphics, and stunning illustrations.
