The 47 Ronin Film (1941) Import - Kenji Mizoguchi

Part 1 and Part 2 of "The 47 Ronin," imported from South Korea, are combined on a single DVD disc with a total runtime of 222 minutes. Part 2 begins after the end credits of Part 1. The original Japanese language is included, with optional subtitles available in English, Korean, or no subtitles. This North America NTSC region-free DVD features Asian text on the front and back of the artwork.

Kenji Mizoguchi's adaptation of Seika Mayama's story was produced over two years and was too expansive to fit into a single film. Thus, it was split into two parts, each running between 105 and 115 minutes, and is now combined on 1 DVD disc. The story follows Lord Asano's resistance to a bribery attempt by a member of the Shogun's court. Despite his honesty, he is unable to combat the corruption within the administration and is compelled to commit harakiri. His samurai followers become masterless ronin, with their leader Oichi conspiring with a loyal group of ronin to seek vengeance for their master's dishonor.
